This is a fiasco. If the Flames want to recover they can show some community leadership here. It’s not like there’s a shortage of need.

That criticism was unwarranted. One of the criticisms was that 50-50s result in only half the money going to charity, and the better way is a 100% donation. Another was that the Poker Tournament had significant costs, so the money should be donated instead. In both of these instances, the decision is not between better ways to raise funds, but between these methods (Poker, Golf, 50-50), or not at all. The CBC article criticising the fundraising was very off base.
Another complaint was that there were funds not yet disbursed; held back by the Foundation. They had been allocated, but not disbursed. Such as the $250,000.00 each year to give every grade 6 student in Calgary a YMCA membership. Because these funds were not yet disbursed, it was shown as a negative, and assumed they were funds retained. I.e. Never to be disbursed. This is flat out wrong.
Of actual funds raised by the Foundation, after expenses (the golf and poker tourneys cost money to run), 88% are disbursed.
Now, all that said, I don't disagree that the optics of this issue are very bad. I think the club sometimes stumbles on its messaging, and, in my personal opinion, could have started with saying all shifts are cancelled, and we will making further announcements as required. There are Employment Standards Code requirements, however.
The discussion surrounding if the workers get paid if/when the shifts actually occur is interesting, as if so, then they get paid to both not work, and then to work. It is very easy for all of us to spend other people's money, "just because they are rich". None of this is easy, for any business, to try to navigate, and it has never happened before.
