That’s part of the league rules. I can’t remember the game but I do remember the same sequence happening in a previous nhl game. The premise is that anything after a play is still considered a penalty because there are no such things as “freebies”. This is to prevent teams from breaking the rules on purpose if they knew that the play should’ve been stopped because of a missed goal. I believe that was how it was explained previously.
I am surprised that both the oilers coaching staff and broadcast clue were not aware of this.
