Do we have a team identity yet?
Looking at our stats since February 8, which is supposedly when Ward and the Flames coaching staff "listened" to the players and moved Backlund back to centre (with Lindholm returning to the wing with Gaudreau and Monahan), the Flames are 9th in points and points percentage (8-4-1).
What is interesting is that they are 2nd in GF/Game at 4.23; the only team that is higher is Philadelphia with 4.58 (not surprisingly they've gone 10-2-0 in that span). In distant 3rd is Vegas, who have scored a full goal less per game (3.50).
Enlarging the sample size (I arbitrarily picked January 1, 2020 to today), the Flames are still 9th in points and point percentage (15-9-2). They drop down to 5th in GF/Game, but are also 21st in GA/Game (it was worse before Talbot recently got that shutout against Florida).
So the Flames are scoring a lot more, but also giving up more than the league average. Is that enough to get us to the playoffs? And will that be sustainable going forward? I'm encouraged that some of our "top" guys are starting to produce offensively; I think it's clear trying to beat teams 1-0 or 2-1 isn't a good recipe for success with how this roster has been built.
P.S. Just for context, prior to January 1, the Flames sat 25th in GF/Game; they fall to 30th if you isolate it to games where Peters was the head coach. Second last to second best is a pretty significant swing...
