Can any Bernie supporter honestly look at Bernie's numbers right now and actually make a serious argument that he would be any more of a favorite to win than Biden? The argument I guess is basically young people reeeeeally love Bernie, but is that seriously a strategy anyone wants to bet on? Let's ride the young vote to winning? Because we all know that's about the last strategy you want to rely on, and this primary cycle is showing that once again is not a great path.
So far anyways it seems like Bernie hasn't really expanded his base from 2016, and there's actually a good argument it's contracted a bit. I think the white working class voters he had in 2016 might be permanently gone to MAGA and even if he is the nominee in November those voters aren't coming back. Thinking he can flip some magic switch to bring them back into the fold likewise seems a foolish strategy to rely on, they can get their anti-establishment anger with Trump, with an added dose of racism and a pinch of conspiracy theories to boot. Not sure what Bernie offers that can top that.
There's really no doubt that Biden isn't a great candidate, but if Bernie is such a great candidate then why have his numbers stalled in this cycle? Perhaps not having someone as awful as Hillary to run against is hurting, or maybe Bernie's support is a lot more capped than his supporters believe. That as much as Bernie supporters think the path to winning is by winning back working class whites or having an unprecedented youth turnout, that the actually path to winning is probably more than likely about winning those suburban voters the GOP is abandoning to cater to the white working class.
Either way this has been a pretty insane last 7 days. Biden was dead, he was 10-1 to be the nominee in a lot of betting markets a week ago, and now he's once again a pretty solid favorite.
