Going out to get a one-dimensional offensive d-man who can definitely put up points seems like a smart move to try and jump start the powerplay. The powerplay is currently 18th, and that's after some improvements to it's productivity over the last few weeks. For most of the year it was in the mid 20's.
Gustafsson could be the spark that could help them score a lot more on the PP, and possibly go on a strong run to end the year. I think we've been missing a player like this for a while now, and it fills a significant need that nobody else was able to fill in the organization.

Exactly.
One dimensional player that is not good defensively. However, that one dimension is something the Flames desperately need.
And he is pushing guys like Davidson and Yelesin out of the lineup. So it's not like the bar that he has to replace on the defensive side is very high either.
