It's hard to argue with this now.
However, there is also a lot hindsight speculation going on. The Flames didn't know if Stone would re-sign or if they could even hope to afford him. 1st + our best prospect for a rental was a huge ask.
Looking back on it, the correct move probably was to acquire Stone, re-sign him, and then move out players like Backlund and Hamonic for peanuts to acquire cap space.
