If only there was a free-agent coach out there who has experience dealing with a highly-mobile defensive unit that can power a team's offence from the backend. Sure sounds a lot like a guy like Laviolette, who has had that experience in Nashville. Just sayin'...
I don't think the Flames lack of offence is a personnel issue as much as a systems issue. I'm pretty sure this D unit has been top 5 in offensive scoring ever since Hartley was coach, and as recent as last season. I know a lot has to do with Gio's decline. But a drop like this season is pretty substantial and concerning. With players like Andersson, Kylington and even Brodie who all skate well, there's no reason more offence from the back can't come from those players who are already here. Not to mention Valimaki who due back next season and Hanifin who should hopefully be able to take another step forward. IMO the decline of Gio should not be holding this team back from finding offence from the D.
I think I saw a stat the other day how the Flames are now near the bottom in the league for D scoring. With the proper system in place that utilizes the backend's strength, that should not be the case.
