JACKETS STING HABS

Ba-ba-ba Jason LaBarbera stood tall stopping 24 of 25 shots as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Tuesday. Keith Tkachuck opened the scoring on the power play for the only goal of the first period to give the Habs a 1-0 lead at the end of 1.

Scott Niedermayer evened things 2:31 into the second period with his 15th goal of the season as he snuck in from the point and tipped Christian Ehrhoffs point shot past Tomas Vokun. Matt Bradley put the Jackets ahead for good 2:37 later. With the Jackets at the tail end of a power play Ritchies attempted centering pass from the corner riccocheted off of Ed Jovanovski and right onto Matt Bradley's stick to put into the open net. The Habs pressed hard afterwards with 4 powerplays including a 36 second 5 on 3 advantage but were unable to get anything past Labarbera who made several key saves.

Having spent all their energy the Habs didn't have much left in the third as the Blue Jackets swarmed the hosts net. Eric Cole scored his 24th goal 4:49 in converted a slick feed from Pierre Turgeon. Late in the frame Dave Scatchard scored his 17th goal of the season with a slapper high over Vokuns glove.

Matt Bradley, Dave Scatchard, Byron Ritchie and Josh Gorges all tallied 2 points for the Jackets. For Gorges it was the 6th staight game in which he's collected a point and now has 11 points in 12 games since joining the Jackets. Dave Scatchard is quietly having a solid season as the big right wing/centre went over the 40 point mark with his two point game. Karel Rachunek played 19 minutes in his Jackets debut and registering no points and finishing even on the night.

Despite a two point effort Byron Rudy Ritchie learned after the game that he had been traded. Ritchie who's registered 4 goals and 15 points in 54 games was traded along with AHL defenceman Matt Greene to the San Jose Sharks for veteran forward Steve Rucchin.
