At this time of year you are not making a hockey deal for either of those guys. If they are being traded, it's because the team is very sure that they can not re-sign them, and they would rather return an asset(s) than keep them for a playoff push and lose them for nothing. So you likely are adding draft picks and or prospects, which you would hold until at least the draft if not longer.
I was actually thinking that the Bouwmeester situation may put St.Louis in the market for a top 4 D that they previously were not in, and that they could be a good landing spot for Brodie. They may be willing to put together a decent package to try and fill that void since they are in win now mode.
But now, I don't see anyway in which the Flames would entertain a Brodie deal as they look like they will still be in the playoff mix in a week and if they move him they would essentially be putting the team in a tough spot to get in.
Ultimately if the Flames can work out a Boumeester type contract for Brodie I would be happy to keep him on the roster. But not being privy to any of these discussions I don't know what the temperature on an extension is. My hunch is that Brodie may prefer to test the market, and possibly move back East, but it's solely my own hunch, no source to back it up. But he has been the one guy the Flames tried to move in beefing up the forward ranks last summer.
I can see why some would lean to the trade some of these guys and retool a bit in the next year or two in order to get the team in a position to take a run. I don't think I'd be telling those folks to give their head a shake though.
