That said I like his effort level, and wouldn't be too worried about term if the price is low enough. Mangiapane might bite on a pretty cheap contract if you dangle for example a 4 year guaranteed NHL paycheck in front of him.

I don't think so.
He's arbitration eligible and has 13 goals in 59 games. 18 goals in a full season pace.
He's 2 years from UFA.
He's probably going to elect arbitration if the Flames don't come to the table with a real offer this time. He's likely to be awarded 2.25-2.75 per on a one or two year arbitration award. I believe if Mangiapane files for arbitration, the Flames get to select whether the award is a 1 year or 2 year deal. If they select 1 year, I believe Mangiapane is then an unrestricted free agent at the end of that contract year. If they select a 2 year deal, he will be 26 and will be a UFA at the end of that deal as well.
Andrew Copp just got 2.28x2 after scoring 11 goals in 69 games.
The Flames elected for short term gain and long term pain. It was a bad idea to grind him out on a 1 year deal for leagee minimum and then give him top 6 linemates for a season, but they did it anyway, rather than moving Frolik in the offseason and giving Tkachuk a long term deal.
So they saved maybe a couple of hundred thousand dollars this year that will probably end up costing them several million over the next couple of years.
