Same here.
I view series like Picard as more like a long in depth movie rather than a tv show. It is very much fleshing out the background on all of the characters and setting things up to explore where the trek universe went after DS9 and the rest. It's nearly impossible to talk about all the new stuff without actually going through the process of showing how things have changed. It is understandable that the first three episodes have been slower, they've had 20 years worth of time go by with one of the empires collapsing because their star blew up, and the ripple effects of all of that on everyone. Can't just get out into space and on a mission without having a clue on why you're there.
It isn't like before where an episode would be more of a commentary on an idea or topic. Like that episode about drug addicts or the gay community or on gender roles. It's not the same era.
