I don't think its coincidence that crew members from the last Romulan ship to get assimilated, and Hugh are at the same facility, or that that ship caused the cube to disconnect from the collective. They are totally setting up for something like the Tal Shiar/Zhat Vash somehow getting their hands on the virus that the Enterprise developed in the I, Borg episode and implanting it on a sacrificial crew. The Romulans would certainly have no problem using the virus like that against the Borg or sacrificing a dozen Romulan "volunteers" to stop a cube.

Bit disappointed that Laris and Zhaban are not joining Picard on his little adventure, just staying home to guard the grapes and Number One.

But how would the virus be implanted on the Romulan crew? They could only be infected with the virus after they were assimilated. I don’t know if the Romulans would have even known about the virus that was created.
