If I had a nickel for every time someone used the desire to win and effort level argument, I'd be rich. Why do people think that a player is on-purposely not trying? Not every player on every team has a compete level like Tkachuk but yet those teams still win stanley cups. Bouwmeester is a great example of that-use players like Gaudreau and Monahan to score goals, not lead the team. Don't just discard them.
There is a whole other team that is tasked with exploiting your weaknesses and without other assets to balance it out, it is pretty easy for an opposing team to do so.
