Removing parking really kills people's desire to walk/spend time somewhere, because now they are in close proximity to moving vehicles.
Think of going for a walk down Macleod or 16th Avenue vs. the current incarnation of Centre Street. While Centre Street isn't exactly a pedestrian Mecca, it is a lot more appealing to spend time on.
Narrow sidewalks would make the problem even worse.
I really like how they've allowed evening/weekend street parking on Edmonton Trail as it has made walking on that street quite a bit better than it was.
