One of the coolest theories I heard about the origins of the Borg was that they were a branch of the
Vidiians (from Voyager). Basically, there was one branch of Vidiians that combated the phage by harvesting and implanting living tissue, whereas the other branch used synthetic implants, and eventually evolved into the Borg.
