Well, no you don't. Find some other schlub who is willing to go anywhere and put him on that line for cheap, he'll get his 20 goals, and you can send him packing next year and save $2.0 MM.
Look at Chaisson. Guy puts up career numbers after a PTO, so they give him $2.1 MM for the next 2 years, moved him off McAvi's line, and he's on pace for about what he's done his whole career, when he was making half as much money.
So next year, if they Keep Kassian on McAvi's line, cool, he'll get 20 goals, but they are probably spending $2.0 MM more than they needed to to get that from anyone on that line.
If they take him off that line, now they're paying $3.2 MM for a 4th liner.
I mean, I'm pretty happy they did it, but it's because it is definitely NOT a reasonable move.

It's a lose-lose.
If Kassian remains on McDavid's line, they have a 4th liner there, scoring 20 goals, when they should have a top liner scoring 35-40 goals.
Conversely, if they find someone else to play with McDavid, Kassian goes back to the fourth line (this is just a matter of time), and is seriously overpaid at $3.2M.
Lowe and behold, Flame fans win either way.
