Kassian wasn't going anywhere tomorrow. Why sign him to this deal while his value is at the absolute peak of his entire career, half because of a ridiculous PR frenzy that will probably die out over the next week?
You could wait until this noise simmers down and he levels ou-....... actually nope, it's not even worth it. That team is just going to do what it's going to do.

Yeah, doesn’t matter he’s not going anywhere tomorrow.
It’s a 100% reactionary move that the one constant that organization has had the last 20 years, revels in and believes it earns him the title of smartest in hockey. Just like scooping Eakins out from under Vancouver’s nose...aftermath doesn’t matter, it’s the headlines and ability to get some national exposure that has been quenched for a few days.
It’s also why the organization is where it is. You think Holland, who never to my knowledge defending Kassian, or Tippett, jumped up and acclerated and signed off on this signing, at this time? Of course not. They were both outranked from above.
Like GM and coaches before them were as well. Soon they realize they have no say in the big decisions, and not long after they start mailing it in at best, or borderline trolling/sabotage/daring them to do something, as we saw with the last months of Chia.
