This is kind of the problem. I'm not sure how the super condensed sugar bagel became known as a donut. That's not really what a good donut should be like, and a lot of it comes down to the texture.
Love crullers. Take the frosted sugar off of the top of them, and what you get is a lightly sweet egg donut with a fantastic light texture. It has been ages since I've seen a good cruller in Alberta. The Tim Horton's ones are dipped in sugar, so that you have to brush off as much as possible so that you can taste the donut underneath.
If you're eating a cruller and the primary sensory impulse is sugar, you're eating a faulty cruller. It's even called a Honey Cruller! When was the last time that you had one and thought 'honey'?
