The thing that's just super weird about Jankowski is that he's basically stopped shooting the puck at all.

He had 99 shots last year and 118 the year before.

This year, through half the season... he has 19 shots. And it's not like his ice time has been cut in half or anything... he's down from 12:42 to 10:51. A definite reduction but not that significant.

What is different is that his offensive zone starts are down from 52% to 41%. His possession results have been much improved this year. He's a defensive gem -- his results in his own zone are superb, according to HockeyViz's shot visualizations. He clearly has an area of strength.

But his number one offensive quality is his shot. And it's just not working for him this year. He's not getting into any dangerous scoring positions. Not at all. And I just don't understand why.

It's astounding to me. He doesn't give the puck away much, he has almost double as many takeaways as giveaways, he's fine at faceoffs, he doesn't take bad penalties... but he also just doesn't shoot the puck anymore. Is it because of his linemates? His deployment?

Part of me wonders if he needs more offensive zone starts to succeed, but he needs to do more first with what he's given to get those opportunities. Who knows if that will happen if he only generates one shot every other night.
