We’re not talking about Agent Coulson, of MCU fame, type development here. His death meant something. I could describe him as a person beyond his role in the plot. Not something I can say for any of these one note background characters from SW.
Admiral Akbar and these other nobodies weren’t important and never had more than a line or two in the movies. Let alone being important enough to justify actual development time in the new trilogy. They’re lucky their existence was even acknowledged.

If you go just by the movies, Ackbar is a very minor character, although with one of the most famous lines in movie history. But he was greatly expanded upon in the EU and was a major character in many books, and turned into a fan favorite. It's just further evidence of the new trilogy writers giving zero ####s about any of the Star Wars lore. I could have actually understood if Ackbar wasn't in the new movies at all, but to go to the trouble of including him just to kill him off redshirt style is an obvious attempt to pander to long time Star Wars fans without actually putting any effort into it
