Apparently the flight was delayed an hour due to a maintenance issue which pushed it well into the middle of the night. Not sure what flying curfew is there but could have been an unexpected time for a commercial flight. AA crew on high alert sees a low flying aircraft come out of nowhere (stealth bomber?) and panics. Seems plausible to me. Ironically the MH flight shot down in Ukraine was also not where it was supposed to be due to weather IIRC. Sad that unplanned events put both planes in harms way, if that’s what actually happened in Iran.
Why airspace wasn’t closed and why the missile was fired are two big questions the Iranians would need to answer for if this is the situation.
