Comparatively speaking the Flames are in a much better position than the Sharks to be competitive in the near future. SJ is saddled with huge contracts to aging players and very little in terms of young players and prospect depth. They appear to be on the cusp of a rebuild, whereas the Flames have several high end players just entering their prime playing years, and without the kind of salary cap headache that plagues SJ.
If we are being honest, the Flames boast a much more attractive roster and cap situation than SJ for a coach who is looking to win.
