To add to that, there is so much parity these days that it is almost impossible to determine who is a clear cut favourite from year to year. It's to the point that if you make the playoffs, you have a decent chance.
Gone are the days of playoff upsets being all that surprising or shocking. If you are a playoff team, you're a reasonable contender IMO.
