Like trackercowe said, there are very few true trilogies anymore. I mentioned it in my post as well. The problem with having a great 3rd movie in your trilogy is that studios will make more. LOTR and Army of Darkness are the only true trilogies listed so far. The Hobbit was a completely separate mess in my opinion.

Star Wars could be consider 3 separate trilogies, though information from the original is required to fully understand the subsequent two trilogies.

If Godfather Part 3 wasn't such a downgrade from the previous 2 (I still don't hate it), they would probably have made a 4th. We were supposed to but Puzo died.

The new Planet of the Apes trilogy is up there for me. I loved all three, they work will together and the quality was maintained throughout. Rotten has War for the Planet of the Apes higher than the others.
