If you think the Flames can win it all in the next two years after this then yes it makes sense to keep him. I'm kind of on the fence of whether or not I actually see this team being that type of elite level over the next 3 years. Id lean more towards no. Its hard to predict what will happen. Losing him for nothing really sets the team back though. In that situation the team seems more like a bubble team without high draft picks. To me that is the absolute worst spot to be for a franchise. Even if he does sign here again he's gonna want 10 million which again limits the team moving forward. It a tough call but to me its one you have to really consider.
Putting the team first is keeping your elite player on a sweetheart deal. I have seen more to indicate he would rather stay here than leave. If he wants $10M on an 8 year deal that is fair market value for a player of his skill and numbers, you sign him every day. Gaudreau puts butts in the seats, he sells a ton of merchandise too, and we are lucky to have him. If BT gets the message he wants to test FA in his last year then you can move him but if you can get a deal done to keep him here you get it done.
