I enjoyed it. Sure it wasn't groundbreaking cinema, but it's the 9th and final (maybe) film of the saga, that's not really the time to break new ground.

It was fan service, and as a lifelong fan, I feel well serviced.

A few things that brought a smile to my face...
  • The festival is only held every 42 years -- Hey, 1977 was 42 years ago too.
  • Lando had a bad feeling about this.
  • Han gets one last "I know".
  • John Williams' (blink and you'll miss it) cameo as a bartender.
  • Chewie finally gets his medal.
  • Wedge!
  • Leia made a sabre! ... Rey made a sabre! A yellow-bladed one at that.
  • Leia becomes a Force ghost. At first, I was upset that she didn't fade away at her funeral, but I liked how they did it.
  • Speaking of Leia's funeral, I definitely got a little verklempt then.
  • All the former Jedi voices (I assume this is what JJ was referring to when he mentioned Ahsoka in one of the interviews -- either that or the backhanded saber style that Rey and Kylo used a couple of times).
  • The saga ends the way it (didn't quite) began, looking out at the twin sunset.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised how well the old footage of Carrie was incorporated. You could tell some of the dialog was written to line up with whatever lines they had recorded (and presumably had someone who could mimic her voice well fill in the bits where her back was turned), but it didn't take me out of the moment. I also liked the flashback to young Luke and Leia training. Their faces were flawless (IMO).

All in all, a fitting end to the saga. But, I'm a sucker for that Galaxy Far Far Away, so what do I know?
