I think his previous move to Russia was just as much creative cap circumvention from Lou Lamoriello as it was Kovalchuk's doing.
He spent most of his career on a dumpster fire in Atlanta with no realistic chance of winning. As we are bearing witness to up north, even the best player in the league can't drag a dumpster fire to success in the NHL.
