I've lived in 3 parts of the country (upper midwest, southeast, and south central) and all have done K-5/6, 5-8/6-9, and 9-12/10-12. Here in Tulsa, we have some gigantic school districts and instead of splitting them to have multiple junior highs and high schools, they often have a single grade per school. So one year you will go to the 8th center then the 9th grade, and then the generic high school for the last few years.
On topic, my initial reaction was that this was a nice thing for their community. I am however pretty struck with that pepsi said about it being the Disney version of healing. I could definitely see a movie being made about the kids overcoming the tragedy to do this. And that in a way makes me sad about the fact that this is what it takes to allow a community to heal. Pretty complex subject matter after the initial positive reaction.
