I try my best to teach my young children that when someone’s actions affect your personal beliefs, safety or security that you need to speak up about the situation and let them know the effect of their actions.
Was there a way that this could have been discussed privately instead? Did that already take place?

I agree with you, people should speak up. But I don't think you understand how much hockey is an old school, old boys club type of sport. Even as of 10 years ago if you spoke up and told someone in the organization how you've been treated it would possibly be dealt with but swept under the rug. If you told the wrong person then your career in hockey is probably over in some respects. And as a young adult, if hockey is everything you know, would you want your career to be done? And outside of the NHL players are not making retirement money, trust me.
Look at Akim, everyone doubted him when the Peter's situation came out. Do you think things would play out the same way if Akim brought this up with Rockford? I doubt it. Social media allowed him to get the truth out without the issue being swept under the rug. And props to him. He's made his mistakes but did he ever go through hell to play the game he loves.
