My guess is that they don't trade or sign either. The risk of injury and the need for defensive depth in the playoffs are going to be a factor. That said, if Valimaki comes back and takes a spot they might just trade one. The other way a player gets traded is if the Flames crash and burn and will definitely miss playoffs by the time the trade deadline comes around.
I know that asset management makes it seem like trading an expiring contract at the deadline is the way to go, but I am a firm believer that this is a win now team, and I would be happiest if they went into the playoffs full strength. The cap savings ( and hopefully playoff success) will have to be enough of a reward.
