I feel like the social ills are more pronounced in the US lower class though as compared to Canada. A rough Calgary neighborhood pales in comparison to a rough neighborhood in the US, and it's hardly comparable.
The other factor is that Canada seems to have a lot of social mobility at this point, whereas that seems to be diminishing in the US. So you have some desperate people in those lower class neighborhoods and between that and the exacerbated social problems it's a poor combination.
