“(Assistant coach) Marty (Gelinas) goes, ‘How old is (that player)?’” recalled Conroy. “I said, ‘I think he’s either 23 or 24?’ And I bring out my phone, to look it up . . . He goes, ‘You can’t do that! Put your phone away.’ I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed. So I got back into the (dressing room) and was like, ‘Oh, he’s 24’ and then put my phone away. (Marty)’s like, ‘Craig, imagine if you got a call . . . ‘

However, Flames general manager Brad Treliving knew he was in desperate need of lightening the mood. So, he asked Conroy, who lives in a perpetual state of positivity and sunshine, to help out and join the coaching staff on the bench and ice for a few days.

“He said, ‘Bring a little . . . you know . . . whatever you bring,’” Conroy said. “Whatever that is, I said I’ll do it.”

Conroy, like he always does, brought it.

In a pair of Mark Giordano’s skates, no less.

Having worked for and with personalities like Conroy I know just how lucky the Flames are to have him in the organization.
