The Leafs had to sign him or risk losing him for pennies on the dollar. They knew going into their RFA signing frenzy that one of the players was likely to be a payroll casualty. He comes up in trade scenarios, because the other three big ticket forwards are unlikely to move.
Pittsburgh proved for years that three high paid forwards seems to be the max, otherwise you are sacrificing too much in other areas.
