Ya, its an outdated expression.
Better off just saying what you intend it to mean: take some accountability for your actions.
You definitely dont need to be "a man" in order to do that, and in my experience, I actually think women tend to do a better job with that.
Its probably more accurate to tell someone "to be a woman" about it. I obviously don't plan on using neither expression, but illustrating perhaps why the expression makes no sense.
