I don't really care if he's fired as I don't think he's shown himself to be a particularly good coach, but this does seem like an odd standard for firing people.

Another aspect is that his job entirely relies on buy-in from others. He has most likely entirely lost the room, and won’t be able to do his job effectively. Personally, he lost a lot of my respect a few days ago, and this letter release has also lost more of my respect. I was actually quite hopeful about him starting this season.
As others have mentioned, there are other layers as well. This apology is a veiled ‘self defence’ as he tries to explain his version of events, emphasize the length of time ago since it happened, etc.
