We can judge all we want, we just can't fire the guy. It seems to me the Flames are doing this by the book. Guessing they are conducting a workplace investigation (likely with outside counsel), suspended Peters with pay for the time being and working through the contract to see if they can avoid paying severance. I would expect nothing less.

Yes they can just fire him. Happens all the time in pro sports. As has been mentioned there is no severance in a case like this. It's not like a normal job. He has a guaranteed contract that pays him until the end of next season. They can simply fire him and keep paying him until then. The only other thing they can try to do is get out of that contract on the basis of ethical behaviour. In that case they can give him some money to go away or they can try to give him nothing and hope he doesn't sue. The holdup is due to this. I'd guess they're figuring out a mutually agreeable amount for Bill to walk away and not keep this in the news.
