GG was a softie disciple of Babcock (liked his systems etc). Peters is a hardass disciple of Babcock. I think Treliving wanted a guy who used Babcock's systems, got GG, found him too soft, then got Peters - same thing only more of a "traditional coach".
I suspect the worst you'd have heard from someone during that process was "he's tough" or "he's a jerk".
When things are going well those things are overlooked, even by the players (see Hartley, Bob). When the going gets tough, an a-hole coach is probably not appreciated (see also Hartley, Bob).
