This is the worst logic. Of course there are no guarantees but statistically speaking the easiest way to land a superstar by far is at the top of draft.
I cant see the Flames going scorched earth though so doesn't really matter but let's say they did. They are so loaded with talent right now you could suck for 2 years, get a few top picks and have a boat load of your prospects through trade. I'd find that way more exciting than being a mediocre team for a few more years until we inevitably lose guys to free agency and cap hits go up and have to consider rebuilding then with way less assets. There's no perfect way buy if I had a vote I'd go for a major overhaul and cash in on our abundance of assets so we have a crazy influx of young talent all at once.
