Yup...and that should apply to BT as well. But as you point out, looks like he was unable to see it that way for himself.
I like BT as a GM overall....i think people forget how asset AND NHL player poor this club was when he took over. He has done a LOT of really good work in the last 6 years. I think the scouting has been great, I believe its the most stable the farm team has been in years, his trades for the most part are very good, and without question he is a master negotiator with player agents.
This particular series of events though are as about as bad as it gets for a GM.
He made a big mistake...then he doubled down and made it worse. That has to have the attention of his bosses although it doesnt mean he is in trouble with them. Not with a 2 month old shiny new contract in his hands.

I can't agree with the bolded. In the history of the Flames franchise, has a new GM stepped up into a better situation than Treliving did?

Some good young players
Extra draft picks
Low initial expectations, giving him freedom to trade away vets for futures
Control over timing as to when hire "his" coach
