I don't know, maybe it is a case of if Gaudreau goes, it helps to grow Monahan as a player. It gets him to play with possession more, and maybe he works with Tkachuk over an extended period.
But it has to be the right package in return that doesn't close a window with this core in the next few years. A high end forward with size, blue chip prospect on the cusp that can join the fold in that time frame, and a top 10 pick type of return.
Because Johnny could very well go on to put up 100 point seasons in a new environment at a cheap price tag. The cost for that has to be steep.
