My theory is that the trend of kickers missing a lot of kicks coincides with moving the single point to a 32 yard kick. Kickers used to only have to focus on making FG's as the single point was automatic but now kickers are having to make FG-length attempts after every TD plus FG's when their teams can't get into the end zone. Kickers are simply having to make a lot more kicks now and maybe coaching and mental preparation hasn't changed to cope with it.
