Don Cherry was a career minor league tough guy during the Original Six era, the tail end of which saw the rise of NHL expansion and the rival WHA. In the rush to fill vacancies, European and College-trained players entered the talent pool. Cherry did find success as a coach in the AHL milieu, but was over his head at the NHL level as European and American College hockey coaching techniques took hold.
He is a relic of a bygone era.
