He doesn't hide the fact that he prays for guidance and does what he thinks God wants him to do.
I can't provide evidence that Jesus commanded him to fight it because I think that is nonsense. But going by his own behaviour and proclamations, I think he thinks Jesus had something to do with the decision.
Of course, maybe he's just a con man and doesn't really believe all this stuff and uses it in a cynical (and successful) attempt to curry favor from the bible thumpers and morons.
