I remember that this was Lucas' dream concept back when he started making the prequels.
To have CGI become realistic enough so that you didn't have to deal with actors on set.
I admit while I liked the return of Tarkin in Rogue One, the CGI really didn't look human, but it worked because of the character of Tarkin.
