I'm not sure it was the Jedi being bored. It was the Jedi being arrogant.

Later on it was Palpatine that paid for his arrogance.

The Sith plan to defeat the Jedi had been in play for 1000's of years and it was based around the Sith re-inventing themselves and realizing that knowledge and not light sabres was power.

Even Yoda realized it when he was facing Sidious. The Jedi had spent 1000's of years training to face the Sith of the last war, whereas the Sith had evolved beyond them.

Palpatine said it all when he was zapping Luke "You will pay for your lack of vision". The Jedi had no vision and the Force had basically abandoned them, overwhelmed by the Dark Side.

When Palpatine fell it was for the same reason, his arrogance lead to the dark side being clouded by the Light side.

Eventually the Force makes everyone it's $$$$$.
