I would imagine they already had permission to speak with Stone and his agent and had a very detailed understanding of what a deal would cost and that Stone would sign it if Brad was at the point of thinking a deal was imminent.
Very hard to believe Brad would have got that far without any contact and at the very least verbal agreement on a contract extension. He likely knew what the contract would cost and that Stone would sign it if they were as far along as Brad suggested and I don't see any reason to disbelieve what Brad says in interviews. He doesn't seem like a verbal diarrhea kind of speaker.
