I'm actually not sure he has the right combination of speed and hockey IQ to play center at the NHL level. I think that actually leads to what looks like a lack of intensity, he's always thinking instead of just anticipating/reacting and he doesn't have the speed to catch up which causes him to be a little behind the play at times.
I think that's why he seems to be more intense on the PK - less thinking and just reacting and he has a very defined role on the PK.
Personally that's why I wouldn't mind seeing him on the wing where he doesn't have as much defensive responsibility. He's generally strong on the boards, and has a decent shot, lets see how he looks away from the middle of the ice.
