Once you're over the red line, you can't go back to the defensive side of the line with the puck. In basketball, it's a loss of possession. I guess here it would be a defensive zone faceoff. Obviously if the other team gains possession, or shoots it out, then you start again.
I just think its hard to play keep away if you're restricted to half the ice. And then once you gain the blue line, you could still exit the zone and everyone tags up, but then you have a really small space to operate in (between the blue and the red).
The one great thing about 3 on 3 is the lack of whistles. You want to keep that. And to me, if you have possession in the offensive zone, its still exciting even without a shot, as there is pressure and the anticipation while you look for an optimal shot.
This change might not do anything, but it's also relatively minor IMO and maybe worth a shot.
