I agree with your take and have no skin in this argument. Most years there’s not a big difference between #1 #5 or even #15 picks. It’s not like other sports where #1 picks are guaranteed stars. A lot of teams get to the point where their payroll gets up there but they’re not competitive due to a bunch of bad contracts and need to reset. It seems the trend among the well managed teams is to shy away from long term 9 figure deals that only pay off for a year or two and kill the future with the goal to be competitive every year.
