It's definitely a work in progress. I suspect it's a personnel thing as much as it is a systems play thing. They just play a little bit too loose, and pucks get through their defensive structure more than they should. That's a systems thing to me.
But then you see some players just have no awareness of the situation, or the decision making process is worse than junior players, and you have to question if those particular players will ever be good defenders at the NHL level.
It's been the team's achilles heel for a while now. They have the weapons on offense, but they spend too much time defending to let those guys do what they do best.
This is why they went and got Bobrovsky, expensive as he was. I've seen him save 4 or 5 sure goals already this season, helping his team stay in games where they were being pretty strongly outplayed. Give coach Q enough time and I'm sure the team will get better, but I don't know that it will ever be a strength of the team.
